HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) — South Haven Area Emergency Services members helped rescue two kayakers from Lake Michigan on Tuesday afternoon, June 9, 2020. (See photo gallery.)
Dispatchers sent the rescuers to the scene at 2:05 p.m. and spotted the distressed kayakers from the shoreline at Packard Park. At that moment, steady south-southeast winds were pushing the two further out onto the lake.
A SHAES responder commandeered a person on a jet ski and headed out approximately a mile to assist the kayakers. One person was in the water; both were wearing life jackets. The SHAES fireboat arrived on scene and returned the kayakers to shore. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter arrived on scene as the rescue wrapped up. Neither kayaker was injured.
