HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Holland firefighters doused a scap metal fire at Padnos Recycling on Seventh Stree near PIne Avenue in Holland early Friday morning, June 12, 2020.
Firefighters were dispatched at 1:21 a.m. on the report of a refuse fire in the back lot of Padnos Recycling, with smoke and flames visible.
On arriving at 1:29 a.m., the first unit reported a heavy fire involvement on a large pile of scrap metal set to be recycled.
Initially firefighters deployed a tower ladder to pour large amounts of water on the burning scrap heap. As more firefighters arrived, they expanded the attack on the fire. The size of the pile and the many voids created within it made for challenging conditions, according to fire authorities.
Once the major part of the fire was controlled, firefighters worked with Padnos employees to strategically use heavy machinery to deconstruct the pile of scrao,
They used two cranes with hose lines to bring the fire under control. Water used oh the fire was contained and treated through an on-site treatment system. At approximately 4 a.m., the fire out. The last firefighters cleared the scene at 4:41 a.m.
Fire officials indicated the fire appears to have been unintentional.
No one was hurt.
The Holland Fire Department received mutual aid from Graafschap Fire Department and Hamilton Fire Department who provided station coverage during the incident for additional calls. AMR was on standby for Padnos employees and assessment of fire personnel on scene.
