HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy officials declared an Action Day for elevated levels of ozone to be extended through 12:45 p.m.Saturday, June 20, 2020.
This alert applies to pollutants are expected to be in the unhealthy for sensitive groups range. The alert continues to be in effect for the following Michigan counties: Allegan, Ottawa, Van Buren, Kent, Muskegon, Mason, and Oceana.
Holland-based allergest, Dr. Ulf Hierwimmer said people most affected have lung or heart issues — but even healthy, active people of all ages can feel the effects of a heavier load of pollutants in the air.
People urged to avoid activities which lead to ozone formation, including refueling vehicles; topping off when refueling; using gasoline powered lawn equipment; or charcoal lighter fluid.
Helpful activities include: car pooling; biking to work; delaying or combining errands; and using water-based paints.
Active children and adults as well as people with respiratory diseases such as asthma are encouraged to limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
