GEORGETOWN TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 8, 2022) – Two persons from Hudsonville, one of which needed to be extricated, were injured in a two-vehicle crash near Jenison on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ryan DeVries, deputies and other first responders were dispatched to the intersection of Chicago Drive (M-121) and 18th Avenue around 3:30 PM. That was where a northbound minivan was hit by a box truck that was apparently “disregarded” a red light while traveling the state trunk road.
An 80-year-old woman who was the passenger of the 83-year-old man driving the minivan was pinned in her vehicle and was taken to an undisclosed “local area” hospital with serious injuries. The driver was also reported as injured by DeVries, but the sergeant didn’t go into detail about his ailments. The truck driver, a 23-year-old Hudsonville man, was not hurt.
This is the second such collision in less than a week involving elderly motorists in the right-of-way victimized by drivers who crashed into their vehicle. Last Saturday, a driver going through a stop sign on Jackson Street at 8th Avenue between Jenison and Jamestown smashed into a vehicle, killing a 92-year-old Grand Rapids man inside and hospitalizing his driver.
Both of these injury crashes remains under investigation.
