HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The air-quality alert has been extended to 9:15 p.m. Tuesday July 7, 2020, for the following counties: Allegan, Ottawa, Muskegon, Kent, and Van Buren.
Officials from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy made the declaration based on elevated levels of ozone.
Pollutants are expected to be in the unhealthy range for people with breathing or other sensitivities.
People are urged to avoid activities which lead to ozone formation: refueling vehicles (including topping off) when refueling, using gasoline powered lawn equipment and charcoal lighter fluid.
People can help limit the problem by car pooling, biking to work, delaying or combining errands, and using water-based paints.
For safety’s sake, active children and adults as well and people with respiratory diseases such as asthma are advised to limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
