HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Holland city officials revisit anti-discrimination measures involving housing and employment for the LGBTQIA community
Holland is Ready, Holland Pride, Out on the Lakeshore have been advocating for these changes for many years.
Holland City Council got widespread attention after a 5-4 vote in 2011, rejecting such an ordinance. Then-Mayor Kurt Dykstra cast the deciding “no” vote.
Since then, members of council have gradually been replaced, to the point that today, two-thirds are newer members. Sixth Ward Councilman Dave Hoekstra – believes that it’s time to bring the matter up again.
He said recent discussions “reflect an eagerness” to talk about the option and he believes the general public is ready for it, too.
At the council’s direction, City Attorney Ron VanderVeen drafted an ordinance, and options will be discussed during a 5:30 p.m. work-study session Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at Holland City Hall’s council chambers.
People who want to go to Holland City Hall must wear a mask, observe social distancing — and be aware that the number of people allowed in council chambers is limited, because of COVID-19. Anyone wanting to email a comment should address their notes to publiccomment@cityofholland.com and send the email before 5 p.m.
