LAKE TOWNSHIP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) — A motorcyclist is dead and a man is in custody after a crash in Berrien County.
Officials with the Michigan State Police Niles Post say the 33-year-old man from Chicago was riding his motorcycle on westbound I-96 near mile marker 19 in Lake Township around 1 a.m. Sunday when he was rear-ended.
The motorcyclist was killed and the driver of the passenger car, a 26-year-old Covert man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
An investigation revealed that authorities believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash, so the Covert man was taken to the Berrien County jail where he awaits arraignment.
The crash remains under investigation and names are not being released, pending arraignment of the Covert man, and notification of the deceased man’s family.
Michigan State Police were assisted at the scene by Berrien County Sheriff’s deputies, police from Lincoln and Lake townships, as well as both townships’ firefighters and Medic 1 Ambulance.
