SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The communities of Saugatuck, Douglas and Saugatuck Township are looking at ways of improving their recycling efforts.
A Tri-Community Recycling Ad-hoc Committee, made up of governing body members from those three municipalities, was established at the end of March to “identify and address critical recycling issues, and to provide better education and processes to enhance and maximize recycling activities in the most cost effective manner to the public,” according to the committee’s mission statement. Over the course of the following five meetings, the committee discussed goals and outcomes, reviewed the process for securing a recycling grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, and came up with a survey to canvas residents’ knowledge, determine the ease and/or difficulty of recycling, and see how recycling-related communication and education can be improved.
During Monday evening’s meeting of the Saugatuck City Council, the TCRC will provide an update on its efforts, including a time frame of September 8th through September 25th in which the survey would be made available, with a draft report of findings set for October 9th. According to documents attached to the Council meeting’s agenda, the survey would take about six minutes to complete, and would be available online, as well as upon request from the three participating muncipalities.
The Saugatuck City Council meeting is set for 7 PM, with instructions on public observation/participation online in the agenda documents.
