Among those hurt: A toddler and four other residents of the home; one of the people who helped rescue people, and a firefighter who suffered a minor should injury.
Holland Fire Marshal Bret Groendyke said three went to Holland Hospital with smoke and burn-related injuries, one in serious condition; three were treated at the scene — two residents for smoke-related injuries and one of the rescuers, who cut his hand and suffered smoke inhalation. One Holland firefighter suffered a minor shoulder injury, according to Holland Fire Capt. Chris Tinney.
The initial investigation indicates the fire was accidental and may have started in the front living room. The house is a total loss, according to fire officials. The fire was fast-moving and produced heavy smoke. A roof collapse complicated matters and hid a secondary fire, according to Tinney.
The fire’s intensity damaged a neighoring home’s siding.
Holland firefighters were assisted by firefighters from Hamilton, Holland Township, Graafschap and Park Township departments, who provided both direct assistance on scene and responded to four unrelated incidents during the 19th Street response. Holland police, Holland public safety victim services unit volunteers, AMR Ambulance, and the American Red Cross also reponded to help at the scene.
Firefighters remained on the scene until nearly 3 p.m. Friday. The fire investigation continues.
