OTTAWA COUNTY (WHTC-AM/FM) — A 23-year-old Grand Rapids man is in critical condition after a late-night crash in Zeeland Township, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Dill. He had been headed eastbound on I-196 in Zeeland Township, near Black Brook Drive.
He tried to pass a slower-moving car in a no-pass zone. Entering the westbound lanes while passing, the Grand Rapids man’s vehicle struck a 2011 Ford Focus, which had a 45-year-old Wayland man at teh wheel.
The 23-year-old had not been wearing a seatbelt and is hospitalized with critical head injuries, Dill said.
The Wayland resident had been wearing his seatbelt and was not injured, Dill said.
Zeeland Township firefighters and AMR Ambulance EMTs assisted at the scene.
No names are being released at this time. The crash remains under investigation.
