According to Ottawa County Clerk and Register of Deeds Justin Roebuck, it’s property fraud.
“I could literally go into the (register of deeds) office today, forging your signature on a deed, and deed your property to me,” Roebuck explained during a Wednesday appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town.” “Of course, that is something that can easily be proven wrong in a court of law, but the problem is that, you as a property owner, have to go through all of those steps in a court of law in order to clear your title.”
Roebuck said that there is an online free Property Fraud Alert Service available through his office that will send an email, a text or a phone call (your choice) when a deed or property document is registered in your name.
