HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Herrick District Library’s popular Hour of Code: Intro to Coding event will return this month.
Thermostats, cars and even everyday appliances use computer coding. Children 8 to 11 years old will explore the basics of coding through a code.org session set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at Herrick District Library, 300 S. River Ave.
Children will use Minecraft characters and worlds to learn how coding works. The block coding program comes from code.org, a nonprofit dedicated to helping every student learn computerscience.
Learning to code is valuable to many future careers, but it also encourages a growth mindset, flexible thinking, problem solving, decision making and thinking outside of the box, said Anne Pott with the HDL children’s department.
Both beginners and intermediate little coders will find something they like in the program, Pott said.
“Coding is problem solving,” she said. “It cultivates problem solving skills that kids can take anywhere.”
Hour of code is a nationwide movement that teaches people young and old how to code using blockdrag-and-drop programs.
“Coding is very specific, but it’s also very creative,” Pott said. “Kids should come ready to learn andexperiment!”
