DOWAGIAC, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) — Larry Waldschmidt’s family and a wide circle of friends relentlessly shared the story of his disappearance from the front yard of his Dowagiac home on March 27, 2019. The 78-year-old man had Alzheimer’s and was an insulin-dependent diabetic, they said. He’d disappeared along with a white Ford Escape.
Exactly three weeks later, Cass County Sheriff Richard J. Behnke announced that the body of the endangered missing man had been found in Cass County’s Penn Township.
Sheriff Behnke’s announcement indicated Mr. Wadschmidt’s car was found in the driveway of a Kelsey Lake Street residence, west of Decatur Road. The owners were not staying there, and the Ford appeared to belong in the driveway, so no suspicions were raised, police said.
An autopsy is scheduled to determine his cause of death.Behnke indicated dozens of tips came from around the state, but none solved the case.
“The family and Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all the news media, friends, and first responders that have helped in the search for Larry,” Behnke wrote.
