HOLALND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The 90th annual Tulip Time Festival is one for the books — the record books, that is.
Tim Vreeman, the festival’s board chairman, couldn’t contain his excitement while thanking sponsors just before Saturday’s fireworks, announcing 4,200 runners had joined the and that on Saturday, May 11, 2019, Windmill Island Gardens saw 13,000 visitors. Those are just two of the records set for this year’s festival, which, despite some cooler weather, turned out better than just fine.
The records thrilled Tulip Time board member Beth Blanton of Zeeland, a Tulip Time board member, and Lakeshore Advantage’s vice president of engagement.
“We’ve had wonderful crowds. We’ve actually had good weather — I mean, it’s been a little chilly, but you know that means the tulips are perfect. They’re peak — and they’re gorgeous,” she said Saturday night,
While rain threatened Saturday’s fireworks, Tulip Time officials held steady, despite Sunday night being the designated rain date. Because last year’s fireworks were cancelled, with no rain date, this year’s included those leftover explosives, which may have been a record in itself.
Though the rain and cold temperatures threatened the fireworks display — thermostats hovered around 45 degrees, with a windchill of 41 — those who braved the weather and showed up got terrific seats for the big show. The rain disappeared right around 8 p.m.
