She was born to the late John and Grace VanTholen on October 17, 1933, near Chicago, Illinois, and was the youngest of eight brothers and sisters. She ultimately had many nieces and nephews who lovingly called her by her nickname “Aunt Mike”. Marge graduated from Chicago Christian High School in 1952, attended Calvin College, and obtained a Registered Nurse degree from Aquinas college while raising her family.
She is survived by her loving husband, George Slater, whom she married in 1955. They lived near Chicago for several years before relocating to Holland, Michigan in 1969. Marge is survived by three children: Deb Slater of Zeeland, Michigan; Sue Slater of Holland, Michigan and Steve & Amy Slater of Berrien Springs, Michigan. She is also survived by two grandchildren: Lauren (James Martzall) and great-grandchildren Elaine, Benjamin, and Amy; as well as grandson, George (Kelly Slater) and great-grandchildren Charlie and Jack.
Marge was a devoted wife, friend, and helpmate to her husband, George, as they worked together in the many businesses they owned over the years. She selflessly served others by volunteering for Hospice, serving as a Stephen Minister, helping friends when needed, and serving several other organizations that help those in need. She was a loving and supportive mother to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and a true friend to many. She will be greatly missed.
