HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A West Olive man was killed in a multi-vehicle crash just after 12:45 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2019, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Dill.
Police responded to the report of a pin-in crash on eastbound I-96 near the 18 mile marker in Polkton Township, and found five vehicles involved.
Investigators found that a 23 year-old Kentwood man, driving a Mercedes Benz east on I-96, encountered slow traffic — backed up by road construction. The Mercedes driver attempted to avoid the traffic, but lost control of his vehicle, striking a Lexus stopped as part of the construction-related traffice backup. The crash sent the Lexus into a Ford Escape which itself crashed into two other vehicles.
The driver of the Lexus, a 62-year-old West Olive man, was declared dead at the scene, according to Dill.The Mercedes driver went by Aeromed to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital with critical injuries.The 60-year-old female passenger of the Lexus went by LIFE EMS ambulance to Spectrum Health with critical injuries.The other three drivers were not injured, Dill said.This crash remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
