HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Rides, games and fun are headed to Kollen Park as Herrick District Library kicks off its summer season with the fourth annual HerrickFest.
The family friendly celebration of learning, the library and community will have 29 activity stations throughout Kollen Park, 240 Kollen Park Drive, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2019.
The usual favorites, Critter Barn; barrel rides by Fulfilling Life Ministries; and Lakeshore Makers, return, with new attractions such as the Smithsonian SparkLab! from the Holland Museum andpersonalized book recommendations.
“HerrickFest moves the library outside its four walls. Herrick District Library is about lifelong learning and connections and community. HerrickFest celebrates all of that,” HDL librarian Liz Hegg said.
HerrickFest is a time to “connect, discover and create” – the library’s motto. Event-goers will get to know neighbors and the organizations that serve the community, ignite curiosity and wonder with STEM activities, discover a new hobby with gems and minerals or learn about llamas, therapy dogs or farm animals, feed literary love by discovering reading programs or watching HDL’s all-star storytime cast and just have fun.
The event is entirely free.
Sweet treats will be available first come, first served from Holland Department of Public Safety’s PolarPatrol and Macatawa Bank Snack Shack. Families wanting a little more substantial meal are encouraged to picnic in the park.
HDL staff members will offer rock out storytimes from the Kollen Park bandshell stage. Hope SummerRepertory Theatre members will give a sneak peek performance of this season’s “Elephant and Piggie’s We are in a Play!”
The HDL Book Bike will be stocked with books for checkout for patrons with a library card. Those wholive in the library district, but don’t have a library card but have valid picture ID can sign up for one.
Not sure what to borrow? Children’s author Travis Jonker will provide personalized readingrecommendations.
Kids and adults will be able to sign up for the library’s summer reading program that encouragesparticipants to read 24 hours over the course of the summer and complete fun activities. Everyone who completes the challenge will receive a free book.
Teens will also be entered to win gift cards. Signups are also available at each library location (300 S. River Ave. and 155 Riley St.) or at herrickdl.beanstack.org.
The HDL Seed Library will have a booth where event-goers can make their own native wildflower seed bombs to plant at home or in the wild. Attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies to local yards and gardens is the heart of the food system.
The seed library, now in its second year, offers thousands of herb, vegetable and flower seeds for freeevery day at both HDL locations.
Both HDL locations will be closed to staff the event. If HerrickFest is cancelled due to inclement weather, both locations will be open for business as usual.
