HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – As those among the Lakeshore are among more than 150 million people nationwide dealing with record-breaking heat this weekend, a local doctor has some advice for handling the heat.
What you take in is as important of a factor as anything you do in preventing heat-related illnesses, according to Dr. Ulf Hierlwimmer. “I recommend now, for the average adult, up to one gallon of fluids per day,” the allergist said during his monthly appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town” on Thursday. “It should predominantly be non-caffeinated; clear liquids are still the best, and some of your foods, such as cold soup that some people like to take, that’s fine, for it counts towards that gallon.”
An excessive heat warning is in effect for Allegan and Ottawa counties through 8 PM on Saturday, as 90-plus temperatures are stretching from Arizona to New England.
