ORLANDO, FL (WHTC-AM/FM) – As the 50th anniversary of the first man on the moon comes on Saturday, the question of if or when the US gets back to sending men into space comes up.
According to CBS Radio News’ Peter King, there is sentiment for returning to the Space Age. “The Trump Administration wants to put American Astronauts back on the moon by 2024,” the Orlando-based correspondent said in a recent interview on “WHTC Morning News.” “The question is – is the money going to be there to do it? That’s a huge question, along with the development of the technical things that they need to do to get back there.”
King cited results of a recent CBS News poll showing that, while nearly 3 out of 4 respondents receptive for sending astronauts to the moon and Mars, 52 percent felt that the additional 1.6 billion dollars needed to get men back to the moon could be “better spent elsewhere.” “Remember the phrase from (the movie) ‘The Right Stuff,’ ‘No bucks, no Buck Rogers,’ it’s all got to be paid for,” the correspondent added.
