LEIGHTON TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A 58-year-old man who lived near Green Lake drowned there in northeast Allegan County on Saturday, July 21, 2019..
According to Allegan County Sheriff’s Sgt. Todd Wagner, the victim was swimming off of his pontoon around 2 PM when he went under the water.
He was not wearing a life jacket, Wagner said in a statement emailed to media.
The Sheriff’s Office Marine and Road Patrols, along with the Leighton Fire Department, responded to the scene, accompanied by the Allegan County Dive / Rescue and Recovery Team, but reports of where he was last seen were sketchy, police said. Severe storms, wind and lightning continued through the afternoon making search and recovery efforts difficult.
Kent County’s dive team assisted the recovery with additional sonar technology and underwater cameras, as recovery was complicated by limited information, personnel, and conditions, Wagner said.
The search resumed at daybreak on Sunday, when first responders found the victim’s body. His name is being withheld, pending notification of family members.
The incident remains under investigation.
