ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Kaila DiNallo calls it a “perfect storm.”
The staffer with the Versiti Blood Center of Michigan, formerly known as Michigan Blood, says that the summer vacation season leads to dangerously low levels of blood reserves for medical facilities.
“For Michigan, almost 30 percent of our blood products come from education, from our schools, our colleges,” DiNallo said in a Thursday appearance on “WHTC Wellspring,” sponsored by Spectrum Health-Zeeland Community Hospital. “When school’s out, we have fewer donors that are coming to donate.
“Donating blood is not a priority (for those going on vacation). Making memories and traveling with family are great, but patients are relying on you to donate. “
Versiti is holding a blood drive at ZCS’ DeWitt Professional Building on August 14th; an American Red Cross-related blood drive is slated for Friday at Holland Hospital.
