HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The National Weather Service has issued beach hazards statement, in effect through late tonight in Ottawa and Allegan counties and north along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
High waves, combined with the high-water levels, are creating strong current and dangerous swimming conditions. Expect rip currents and other types of dangerous waves. Anyone going into the water should wear a life vest, according to authorities.
The south side of piers and breakwaters will be most dangerous. Waves will overtop piers and breakwaters, with the power to sweep people into the water. Even strong swimmers will struggle in the water.
Even swimmers near the outlets of rivers may find they are quickly pulled offshore, especially around Ludington State Park.
The National Weather Service statement from the Grand Rapids officer included this simple comment: “Stay out of the water!”
