ST. JOSEPH, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – As members of Congress are taking the month of August off from duties on Capitol Hill, Senators and Representatives are stumping their states and districts, hearing from constituents on issues of concern and discussing what measures they have taken up in Washington.
For Republican Congressman Fred Upton of St. Joseph, he’s talking up a pair of bills he signed on as an original cosponsor designed to protect the Great Lakes. One would require the US Army Corps of Engineers to carry out a study that assesses threats and resiliency measures for coastal communities, and the other would reauthorize the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative for five years, preventing it from being a target of White House budget cuts.
“This is mighty important to all of us,” Upton explained during an appearance this week on “WHTC Morning News.” “The Great Lakes Caucus, a pretty big, bipartisan group, has led the way on a good number of things, whether it would be water quality, invasive species, fighting the Asian Carp, and we are protective as we can be in staving off those budget cut proposals that, thank goodness, President Trump backed off of when he was here in Grand Rapids in March.”
Both the House and Senate are not slated to return to Washington for business until September 9th.
