WEST OLIVE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The Ottawa County Community Emergency Response Team wants you!
No, county Emergency Management Director Nick Bonstell isn’t going to don an Uncle Sam costume and pose for a image pointing a finger at you, but his department is looking for those wishing to be willing to help when an emergency does strike. The 24-hour CERT basic training course, “is comprised of eight units and an exam/disaster simulation,” he explained. “CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number.”
Those in the program will get training sessions on disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, CERT organization, disaster psychology, and how CERT relates to acts of terrorism. The sessions are held on Wednesday evenings, from 6 to 9 PM, at the county’s Fillmore Street Complex from September 4th through October 23rd, and applicants must attend all sessions to receive a CERT Certificate.
Registration is open through August 30th. To register please go here before August 30th. For more information you may contact Jay Poll, Ottawa County CERT Chief Coordinator at OCCERT.CC@Gmail.com or Ottawa County Emergency Management at 616-738-4052.
