HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Seven months since a string of payday loan stores in West Michigan were held up, it seems that another string of commercial robberies are underway in the region, with cell phone retailers the target.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant David VanderPloeg, a single person walked into the Cricket Wireless store off of North Park Drive shortly before the store had opened for business around 9 AM on Monday. Brandishing a handgun, the suspect, described as an “unknown Hispanic male” demanded and received an undisclosed amount of money from the lone clerk on duty and then fled on foot. The clerk was shaken but unhurt. A police canine unit was deployed but could not track down the perpetrator. No video image of the suspect was immediately available as the incident remains under investigation.
VanderPloeg reportedly told WOOD-TV that this crime is not related to four other cell phone burglaries reported since Sunday, three of which were in Kent County and another in Jenison. No suspects are in custody in any of these cases.
