HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Although state lawmakers are on summer break until after Labor Day, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t working.
Two House members are holding a joint town hall meeting this evening at Holland City Hall. “It’s really, really important to the people of my district to find out what is going on with road funding,” second-term Republican Mary Whiteford of the South Haven area explained in why she and first-term lawmaker Bradley Slagh of Zeeland Township are staging this session. “Even though we’ve maneuvered past a lot of cones for road construction that we see, we want to make sure that we have a very proactive perspective; to be cost-effective and make sure we’re doing this right.”
Last week, state Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey said that he and other majority Republican leaders in the Legislature have been talking with the administration of the first-term Democratic governor Whitmer about resolving the differences in road funding, which is seen as the biggest stumbling block to reaching agreement on a state budget for Fiscal 2020 that begins on October 1st. Shirkey told WTVB’s Ken Delaney that he’s hopeful of making a major announcement on that before the end of this month.
Tonight’s 90-minute-long joint town hall meeting, hosted by Representatives Whiteford and Slagh, begins in Council Chambers at 5:30 PM.
