BLENDON TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The value of an installed door bell camera was evident in a Monday morning arrest of a 38-year-old man who attempted to burgle a home between Hudsonville and Allendale.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Detective Captain Mark Bennett, the unnamed homeowner had put in the surveillance device after a recent break in at the residence off of Stanton Street between 48th and 56th avenues. Around 9 AM, the victim notified Central Dispatch after spotting the suspect entering the dwelling through the camera’s lens.
Responding deputies saw the suspect fleeing the scene and called for backup, which included the arrival of canine and tactical units, as “there was some initial information that the suspect may have been armed,” Bennett said. The dogs were able to track the man to a residence a short distance away on 56th Avenue, and after a brief chase, in which the suspect apparently fell and suffered a minor injury, he was taken into custody.
No weapon was found on the unnamed man, who was taken to an unnamed medical facility for treatment before being locked in the Ottawa County Jail pending a Tuesday arraignment. Bennett didn’t say if any property was taken and/or recovered in the incident, which remains under investigation.
