ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A step in Zeeland’s Downtown Vision Plan could be taken tonight.
The City Council is being asked to put out for bid the demolition of a vacant building at the corner of Main and State. It’s a “key gateway entrance,” according to City Marketing Director Abby deRoo in her pre-meeting memo, and tearing down the current structure would “articulate and illustrate a more attractive site and safer ‘building envelope’ for the future potential building.”
The City won’t do the constructing of such a new structure, according to Mayor Kevin Klynstra. “No, it will be a private investment in that corner,” he said during his monthly appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town” today. “We’ll invest some money in putting a bench or two there and just open that corner up so it’s easier to see at that intersection.”
deRoo has also proposed tearing down the existing building at 135 East Main and constructing a downtown passageway between the north parking lot and Main Avenue entrances, asking Council to “consider initiating a process to create 1 or 2 new quality infill buildings on these properties.”
A 6 PM Work-Study Session is ahead of the 7 PM City Council business meeting at Zeeland City Hall.
