HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — An Olive Township resident lost a garage to fire Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019, according to Olive Township Fire Chief Duane Wolters.
He told WHTC in an email that crews were dispatched ust after 7:15 p.m. Tuesday and found a 24-by-36-foot detached pole barn-style garage with fire shooting through the roof.
James Goulet told WHTC the barn is on his parents’ property, and that he and his dad were visiting neighbors across the street when he noticed heavy smoke.
“I walked around the neighbor’s house and saw smoke billowing from the main garage door,” Goulet told WHTC. “We rushed back to the house while I was on the phone with dispatch.”
He said insurance adjusters are evaluating the dollar cost of damages now.
Once on scene, firefighters doused the fire in about 15 minutes. No one was hurt, Wolters said, and nothng was damaged, other than the garage, which is considered a total loss, though about 16 feet of it was standing after the fire.
Investigators found the fire started in a part of the pole barn used as a workshop with paint, gasoline and propane containers, but the actual cause is unknown at this time, Wolters said.
Olive Township received mutual aid from Port Sheldon Fire and a tanker assist from Blendon’s department.
