HASTINGS, MI (WKZO-AM/FM, May 17) – A 24-year-old Battle Creek man has been arraigned on charges stemming from a tense situation north of Hastings on Monday afternoon that was settled peacefully.
According to Michigan State Police Lieutenant DuWayne Robinson, troopers and Barry County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Welcome Woods Campground around 4 PM on a report of a domestic dispute involving the suspect and his girlfriend, along with threats of killing people in the area heard by witnesses. Those threats included a shot fired from a handgun.
The woman was able to walk away safely from the scene, and the suspect – Trevor Dean Leiter – went into a RV, where he initially refused commands from troopers and deputies to step out. A perimeter was established, and after a short period of time, the suspect did step out and surrendered without incident. There were no injuries reported.
Leiter was arraigned on Tuesday in Hastings District Court on three counts of felonious assault, with no charges for allegedly firing the handgun. The case remains under investigation.
