KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Originally scheduled for a fall 2022 opening, officials say the date for Western Michigan University’s new Student Services Center may, or may not be adjusted.
According to WMU’s Vice President for Marketing and Strategic Communications Tony Proudfoot, workers had noticed a vibration a couple of weeks ago that the onsite construction company wanted to study further, following standard procedure for the company to assume responsibility until all work is complete on the new center before officially turning it over to the university.
The site was closed for inspection and crews were sent home out of an abundance of caution while project architects, engineers, and construction teams performed a comprehensive review and inspection of the structure May 5-9.
Proudfoot confirmed that their project team had verified Tuesday, May 10 that crews could return to most work areas without concern. He went onto say that the project team did identify some beams that will benefit from additional reinforcement as construction is completed, and that any impact on the timeline for completion of the new building has not yet been finalized.
