ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – In this day and age of community tensions, National Good Neighbor Day couldn’t have come at a better time.
Set for September 28th, it’s a time for communities to encourage stronger relationships and create opportunities for neighbors to get to know each other better. In Zeeland, the groundwork for the celebration of this day began on Tuesday with the distribution of pennant flags at City Hall and at the Howard Miller Community Center for residents to display outside of their homes, indicating their willingness to be a good neighbor.
Mayor Kevin Klynstra believes that much of the strife that has stricken numerous cities nationwide, from as big as Los Angeles to as small as Kenosha, stems from neighbors not really knowing each other. “It’s not just your neighbors next door to you,” he said on “WHTC Talk of the Town” during his monthly appearance on Tuesday, “it’s your whole community and surrounding areas as well. Get to know people, stop and talk to them. Get to know what their feelings are and don’t just talk, but listen to what they have to say.”
Residents who pick up pennant flags will also receive a list of Good Neighbor Day ideas that they can check off and return by September 28th in order for their names to be included in a commemorative plaque displayed downtown. More information is here.
