JAMESTOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A 27-year-old Zeeland man died on Wednesday in a three-vehicle pileup on I-196 just east of Hudsonville.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Steve Austin, Kyle Grant was driving his pickup truck eastbound, near the M-6 junction, just before 12 Noon when he tried to slow down in inclement weather for a semi that had nearly stopped ahead of him because of other crashes and slide offs ahead of it. However, Grant lost control of the vehicle, slid sideways into the rear of the semi’s trailer, and then careened into a third vehicle.
Grant was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ottawa County Medical Examiner’s Office. WOOD-TV reported on Wednesday evening that Grant had been a forensics tech with the Grand Rapids Police Department; a search of the department’s website showed that a Kyle Grant was a Crime Scene Technician.
The driver of the third vehicle, 30-year-old Amanda Witteveen of West Olive, was treated at Metro Health for minor injuries and released, with two young children riding with her, along with the trucker, 63-year-old Vasilly Konevitchenko of London, Ontario, were not hurt.
The freeway was closed for several hours for an accident re-creation investigation, which is standard proceedure in any fatal crash, as well as for clean up. The incident remains under investigation.,
