HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A 20-year-old cyclist has died after being struck by a vehicle on a Holland road before dawn on Wednesday.
According to Holland Department of Public Safety Captain Rick Walters, Johnathan Herlein of the Holland area was pedaling southbound in a lane of traffic on Waverly Road between East 24th Street and East 32nd Street shortly before 5 AM when he was struck by a southbound car. The 23-year-old man driving the automobile stopped immediately, called 911, and told responding officers that he couldn’t see Herlein, who was wearing dark clothing. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ottawa County Medical Examiner’s Office and the motorist was not hurt. The name of the driver involved was not disclosed.
Officers believe that a second vehicle may have also struck Herlein before driving off, and anyone with any information on that vehicle and/or its driver is asked to contact the Holland Department of Public Safety or Silent Observer.
It’s the second fatal incident involving a motor vehicle and a bicyclist on Holland’s east side in a four week span; Yen Ngo, an 18-year-old college student from the Quad Cities area visiting the Tulip City, died when she apparently pedaled against a red light while trying to cross a darkened US-31 at East 16th Street on December 18th and was struck by a SUV driving through the intersection on a green light.
