LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – While some might say that a leadership vacuum has been at Michigan State University for quite some time in the wake of the Larry Nassar scandal, the actual absence of a school president may be rectified as early as Wednesday.
Various news reports cite unnamed sources “with direct knowledge” of the situation in reporting that, during a public morning meeting, the MSU Board of Trustees will “unanimously” appoint former Michigan Governor John Engler as Interim President, with his predecessor as state chief executive, Jim Blanchard, serving as a senior advisor. Engler has been a Washington-based political consultant since leaving office in 2003.
The appointments, which would run while a nationwide search for a permanent president is conducted, come after the resignation of Lou Anna Simon last week following the sentencing of Nassar for up to 175 years in prison, as he admitted molesting more than 156 women and girls while serving as a doctor with the MSU athletic department and with USA Gymnastics.
