GEORGETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – There was a two-vehicle crash in Jenison involving a school bus and a truck yesterday afternoon that led to one person being hospitalized.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Eric Westveer, 61-year-old Randal Spohn of Jenison was driving a district bus westbound on Bauer Road, near Meadowbrook Drive west of Bauerwood Elementary School, around 4 PM with an eight-year-old student on board. “It appeared that Randal had suffered from a medical issue, lost consciousness while driving, and the bus then crossed the center line and into oncoming traffic,” Westveer explained. “At that time Randal struck a 2012 Ford Super Duty Truck that was driven by (43-year-old) Zachary Ruf (of Jenison), which was traveling eastbound on Bauer Road. Both vehicles then went off of the roadway and into an adjacent field.”
Neither driver nor the unnamed student suffered any injuries as a result of the crash, but Spohn was taken to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital in stable condition for treatment of the undisclosed “medical condition.”
The crash remains under investigation.
