HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A two-vehicle crash east of Holland before dawn today caused the death of a 37-year-old Zeeland woman.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Steve Austin said that a car, driven by Marisela Gonzalez, was attempting to enter westbound I-196 from Adams Street around 5:30 AM. A westbound semi, piloted by 33-year-old Aaron Lambertson of Howard City, moved into the left lane, but while Gonzalez attempted to accelerate into the flow of traffic, the car lost control on the snow-covered ramp and skidded sideways into the semi’s path.
The ensuing collision caused both vehicles to veer into the median, with the car flipping over one time as a result. Although she was wearing a seat belt, Gonzalez was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Ottawa County Medical Examiner’s Office, while Lambertson, who was also buckled up, was not injured.
The left lane of westbound I-196 was closed for clean up and accident re-creation investigation, as is standard in any fatal crash, before reopening about four hours after the incident.
