MT. PLEASANT, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) –
As the search continues for a Central Michigan University student that allegedly gunned down his parents who had come to pick him up for Spring Break this morning, other students who had been under a campus-wide lockdown are getting an opportunity to leave their residence halls.
A variety of tactical and canine units from various jurisdictions have been deployed in the search for James Eric Davis Jr., an approximately 19-year-old black male, standing 5-10 and weighing 135 pounds. He was described as wearing yellow covered jeans and a blue hoodie, with a pistol tucked under his belt.
According to authorities, two persons who have been only officially identified as “not CMU students” but who have been widely reported to be Davis’ parents were shot and killed in the fourth floor of Campbell Hall shortly after 9 AM. Davis, described only at this point as “a person of interest,” ran off on foot. This has led to the CMU campus lockdown, as well as for all schools in Isabella County and for municipal buildings in Mt. Pleasant, as a safety precaution. Just before 3 PM, CMU officials said that uniformed officers were beginning to “assist” individuals in leaving campus structures on a “building to building” basis.
Classes at CMU were canceled as a result of this incident on this final day before the school’s scheduled Spring Break, and the Chippewas’ scheduled home basketball game with Western Michigan for tonight was postponed. The school has been diverting all who are attempting to pick up any students to a nearby hotel where “university staff” were on site to support the families.
A page on the CMU website has been established to provide official information on the incident.
