ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – For a small community, Zeeland has had it share of contentious issues in recent years.
From the decision to allow alcohol sales by the glass or the bottle, to whether to retain an independent police department or contract out police services with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, the residents of the Lakeshore community have not been shy about letting their elected leaders know how they felt. Another matter that is expected to garner its fair share of comment is a proposed traffic circle for the intersection of Washington and Main avenues on Zeeland’s western gateway.
Mayor Kevin Klynstra and his fellow City Council members will be on hand at the Howard Miller Community Center tonight, armed with plans and documents showing why the 2.1 million-dollar project, which will be financed in part through state and federal transportation grants, is needed. “That intersection has been a problem intersection for a long time,” he explained. “It gets backed up there a little bit during busy times, so we’re trying to get that under control. It’s kind of a love/hate deal with the citizens of Zeeland, and we’ve heard from both sides.”
Council has an April 1st deadline for a decision on whether to go ahead with the project next year or not. Tonight’s special public hearing and council meeting begins at 6 PM.
