ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – One of the more preventable and curable types of cancer is one that many people shun from getting screened for.
March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, spotlighting the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths, with American Cancer Society officials estimating 45 hundred new cases this year in Michigan, with nearly 17 hundred deaths due to the disease. Many people are leery of having a colonoscopy or other simple tests, but Dr. Ben Dozeman of Spectrum Health says that a little inconvenience now can prevent a lot of woe later on. “If we catch colon cancer early, it’s much more treatable than if it is caught in an advanced state,” he explained during a recent appearance on WHTC’s “Wellspring” program from Spectrum Health-Zeeland Community Hospital. “The idea behind colon cancer screening is to find pre-cancerous lesions that we can remove when they’re small, to prevent them from growing into eventual cancer.”
