HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Holland’s Hope Avenue residents have successfully challenged the city’s plans to revamp their roadway.
Holland City Council voted unanimously last night to set a public hearing for a less-ambitious plan.
City planners wanted to install bike lanes, new curbs, better sidewalks and drainage on Hope Avenue, with new sewers on Paw Paw Drive to Cambridge Avenue.
The work would have removed trees along the street and that one change homeowners fought against
Mayor Pro-tem Mike Trethewey said city officials heard resident worries and are looking for ways to preserve plans for bike lanes.
“There wll not be bike lanes, per se, as on Eighth Street or some of the other areas in the city. There was some talk that maybe we’ll be able to have some pavement markings. But the road width will not be expanded to accomodate the extra lane.”
Until the project is finalized, he said, it’s impossible to predict how much home assessments would rise.
