HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 5, 2022) – The sounds of wooden shoes klomping around downtown Holland is slated to begin tonight.
Even the forecast of showers this evening shouldn’t prevent a group of Dutch Dancers from holding one of its last dress rehearsals ahead of the 93rd Tulip Time Festival. Although the renewal of Holland’s annual signature event doesn’t officially begin until Saturday, this 7 PM session at Centennial Park is seen by many as the unofficial start of the celebration of the tulip and of traditional Dutch customs.
As for the star of the show, Master Gardener Jan Meeuwsen of DeBruyn Seed in Zeeland says not to worry. “They’re doing fine,” she said on “WHTC Talk of the Town” during her weekly appearance on Tuesday. “We don’t have to worry about them except for the deer and the rabbits that like to eat them.
“Look for them in sunshine, that would be lovely, for they can get some more growth and some tulips opening up. Go down 8th Street right now, they’re just lovely down there. Down at Windmill Island, they’re getting there; there’s some color out there, and hopefully by next week they’ll be better.”
Tomorrow, the carnival opens in the Heeringa Holland Civic Center Place parking lot at 5 PM, while the final dress rehearsals for the youth and adult Dutch Dancers is at Centennial Park, at 6:15 PM and 7 PM, respectively. The Tulip Time Festival runs through next Sunday, May 15th.
