OTTAWA COUNTY (WHTC-AM/FM) — A little library marking the close relationship between Pink Creek Elementary and Macatawa Bay Middle School is set to be dedicated on April 18.
Macatawa Bay Student Council and the group’s advisor, teacher Aaron Tracy, came up with the idea to create the library and keep it stocked year-round.
Tracy had helped create a book-sharing program with a Pine Creek classroom last school year and asked council members if they wanted to expand that idea to more kids.
The manufaturing tech class developed plans for the library; seventh- and eighth-grade woodshop students built it. Jim Borlik, manufacturing technology teacher, estimated that more than 50 of his students worked on the project.
Then the whole school got involved in a book drive that collected more than 2,000 books.
“It is really great to think that we can help out elementary students,” said eighth-grade Student Council member Aliana Reynolds. “I remember being in elementary school and thinking that middle schoolers were so cool. Now I can give suggestions to kids on books they should read.”
Pine Creek Elementary Principal Krista Visser said her students are very appreciative of the help.
