HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — In a 5-to-4 vote during Wednesday’s regular meeing, Holland City Council members set a two-year pilot period for non-owner-occupied short-term rentals — known around town as Air B&B rules.
The pilot starts May 9. Councilman and Mayor ProTem MikeTrethewey told WHTC he voted against the measure.
“It’s very unusual that we’d vote against recommendations from a couple of committees,” he said. “But there was some great discussion, some great ideas brought out, some misperceptions were straightened out a little bit. We’ll see what the next few years will bring.”
Trethewey said he feels short-term rentals reduce the number of homes that could be used for affordable housing — though he acknowledged that short-term rentals are moneymakers for property owners.
