ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 2, 2022) – What may appear to be a tax hike looms for Zeeland property owners.
The Zeeland City Council, during this evening’s business meeting, holds a public hearing ahead of a vote on a spending plan for Fiscal 2023. The proposed budget of 11.1 mills for general operations and nearly a tenth of a mill for the West Michigan Regional Airport Authority includes what city staffers are calling a “reinstatement” of a one-mill levy, the collection of which was suspended the past two years due to financial concerns stemming from the COVID 19 outbreak.
Also during this evening’s meeting, council will be asked to approve a proposed three-year collective bargaining agreement with unionized police officer. It includes wage hikes of four percent the first year and three percent the following two years, an increase in accumulated comp time from 50 hours to 80 hours, with a 40-hour carryover at the end of the fiscal year instead of 24, and an option for officers to buy life insurance through the city’s provider.
The Zeeland City Council holds a 6 PM work-study session at City Hall ahead of its bi-weekly 7 PM meeting. A link to the agenda is here.
