HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) – Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker says police investigators are examing the recent spate of fatal crashes — nine — over the last six weeks.
“It’s tragic that these people have lost their lives in these accidents,” Kempker told WHTC, adding that the reason for some, but not all, of the crashes were linked to impaired driving. “Alcohol and drugs are still in these people’s systems that are driving.”
Fall is a time to be especially careful on the roads, he said, because traffic crashes tend to spike.
“Historically for some reason, we’ve always seen kind of a spike around September or October,” he said.
Safety advice includes buckling up, observing speeds limits, allowing adequate space between your vehicle and others — and looking both ways twice at intersections.
