ZEELAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 24, 2022) – The road rebuild on I-196 between Hudsonville and Zeeland claimed its first serious injury crash on Sunday.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Matt Wildfong, deputies and other first responders were dispatched to the 59 mile marker of westbound I-196 just before 12 Noon. That was where an unnamed 31-year-old Grand Rapids man, driving a gray sedan, left the roadway and rolled over into a wooded area. The motorist was unconscious and had to be extricated by rescue workers. He was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment of what Wildfong would say are injuries that are not considered to be life-threatening.
The cause of the crash wasn’t immediately determined as the matter remains under investigation.
Last Tuesday, work began in earnest on rebuilding the Interstate in both directions between the 32nd Avenue and Byron Road exits, a two-year-long project.
