HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – If voters pass Proposal 1 next Tuesday which would clear the way for legal recreational marijuana use in Michigan, the city of Holland wants to be ready.
That appears to be the rationale behind a special business meeting this evening by the City Council ahead of its biweekly work-study session. City Manager Keith Van Beek, in a memo attached to the agenda for this meeting, is recommending that the city approve a “Letter of Limited Engagement” with the firm Dickinson Wright, at a fee of 700 dollars, to provide legal services in dealing with the many questions and issues that “will arise if the Marihuana Act takes effect,” according to Van Beek.
As the City Manager sees it, “each community would be required to decide if it is going to allow or prohibit state-licensed recreational marihuana establishments … the City of Holland has indicated a desire to participate in a consortium of local governmental units seeking direction.”
Once the special meeting that begins in the second floor Training Room of City Hall at 5:30PM ends, Council will hold its work-study session, which will consist primarily of the second session of a “Governing Policy Development” program conducted by consultant Dave Medema.
