HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Holland resident Tyler Twiss has been nominated to West Point by Sen. Debbie Stabenow, according to a statement from her office.
Other West Michigan nominees to West Point, the Army’s military academy, include Nunica resident Janna Ercole and Hastings resident Jack Horton. Three West Michigan residents have been appointed to the Naval Academy: Brandon Pham of Grand Rapids; Diego Campos of Battle Creek; and Mary Podiak of Portage. Lowell resident Mason Doorn has an Air Force Academy appointment.
Stabenow announced today, Dec. 27, 2018, she nominated 32 Michigan students in all to the U.S. military academies, in West Point, NY; the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD; the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO; and the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY.
“Michigan is fortunate to have so many exceptional students who want to serve our country through military service,” Stabenow said via the statement emailed to media. “Having demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence in and out of the classroom, I am confident they will represent Michigan and our country well.”
Students seeking appointment to a service academy must first obtain the nomination of their U.S. Senator, their U.S. Representative, or the Vice President. Students nominated by Senator Stabenow’s office went through a highly competitive application process that included interviews by veteran, military and community leaders.
Nominated students must await acceptance for admission by the academy to which they have applied. Other students Stabenow nominated include:
