FERRYSBURG, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A Spring Lake man suffered critical injuries in a two-vehicle crash on a Ferrysburg road yesterday morning.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Mike Vandenbosch, the collision occurred on 174th Avenue south of Van Wagoner Street around 7:45 AM when the landing gear on Mark Huey’s semi tanker broke down, causing him to stop the northbound vehicle near Dogwood Drive and attend to the matter. “While Mr. Huey was working on the landing gear, a 2001 Chrysler minivan, driven by 31-year-old David Wiersma, came up from behind the stopped semi and rear-ended the trailer,” Vandenbosch explained. “Mr. Wiersma was alert and conscious for a brief time after the crash; however, (he) became unconscious and not alert a short time later. It is unknown at this what caused Mr. Wiersma to collide with the back end of the semi trailer.”
Wiersma was taken to Hackley Hospital in critical condition for treatment of life-threatening injuries, while the 60-year-old Huey of Grayling was not hurt.
The crash remains under investigation.
